OUR VINEYARD
At La Festeggiata we only have 2 ha of vines
Our vines are situated in three separate fields around the villa. Every site is different and need different care, handling and picking strategy.
Our top field 540m above sea level is steep and is among the highest positioned vine fields in Chianti Classico. Here we have sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon planted. Turning south west we have the cool mornings with shadows and sunny afternoons. At our top field, which has a cooler climate, we select the grapes for our spumante. We harvest the grapes for spumante earlier than our grapes selected for red wine, to keep acidity and freshness in the grapes. Normally we harvest mid-September for the Spumante.
Later – start October – we harvest for the red wines. We go thought the fields several times picking only the best grape bunches for our top wines and at last pick the healthy bunches for our Chianti Classico DOCG wine. We harvest several days as our grapes matures differently on the different fields, the altitude on our top field delays the harvest a few days.
Our merlot ripens earlier than our sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon and is usually picked end of September
Every year is different therefore we carefully follow the vines and grapes during the season to obtain the best quality possible for our wines each vintage.
At La Festeggiata every grape is handpicked. Harvesting by hand makes it possible to do selections in the fields. We can leave the unripe and unhealthy grapes and only pick the best!
We harvest with friends and family that comes down to visit us from Denmark during harvest time. We lure them to work in the fields by making promises of great harvest dinners and a swim in the pool after harvest :)
